The journey of being diagnosed with and treated for cancer involves more than just doctors and
medications. Laboratory medicine, also known as pathology, plays a vital role. Laboratory
medicine involves the examination of tissue samples, blood, and other bodily fluids by
pathologists to identify abnormalities, determine causes of illnesses and guide treatment
decisions. At The Princess Margaret, sub-specialized pathologists collaborate directly with
oncologists to identify cancer and develop treatment plans. 
 
The Laboratory Medicine Program at The Princess Margaret is enhancing its services by
digitizing pathology and incorporating computer-assisted diagnostics, or Artificial Intelligence
(AI). By digitizing pathology slides, pathologists can access, review and share images with
Cancer Centres across Ontario, nationally and internationally. This will provide remote areas
with access to specialized pathology services and promote health equity. In addition, AI
accelerates diagnoses and helps tailor treatment plans based on individual disease
characteristics, further enhancing quality of care. 
 
While laboratory medicine is at the heart of cancer research, diagnoses and treatment,
pathologists often find it challenging to raise awareness and secure funding, as this work
typically operates behind-the-scenes. This is why we are seeking your support. Your investment
