The Beginner's Guide to Snowshoeing
There are two critical things you need for snowshoeing: snowshoes and snow. We can’t provide you with the snow at Al Flaherty’s, but we can provide you with the equipment and the advice to enjoy it.
The first thing that anyone needs for any outdoor adventure in the cold months is a pair of good winter boots in Toronto. Keep your feet warm, and it’s much easier to keep the rest of your body warm and enjoy the great outdoors. Gaiters and snow pants are ideal for keeping your lower body toasty. Next, you need a good jacket, winter headwear such as a toque or balaclava, and gloves. Goggles or sunglasses are optional.
Many beginners find they have issues with their balance while using snowshoes. A set of poles is an excellent addition to your equipment. They help address that while providing balance through uneven terrain.
It’s a good idea when you’re starting to snowshoe to have a lightweight aluminum pair. These are designed for various weights and come with features such as claws for extra grip and freeze-free bindings for your winter boots. The narrow design is ideal too for when you want to venture off the beaten path and blaze your own trail through the woods. They also don’t pick up much snow on the deck and therefore don’t get too heavy.
We suggest you start slowly to get used to the sensation of the snowshoes and the demand they can place on your legs in deep snow. They gradually build up as your experience, stamina, and balance increase.
