Top 5 Strategies to Win at Waterfowl Hunting
While most people dump salt on their driveway and put on an extra blanket when those icy, windy mornings start blowing in, waterfowl hunters are gathering their hunting gear in Toronto and heading out into the wild. These are the days when waterfowl hunting is at its best.
Just because hunting is best when the weather is at its worst doesn’t mean you are out of luck shooting on those days. It just means that you need to apply a few tricks to make sure your hunting rifle scopes are finding their targets before they fly away. Here are five strategies to keep in mind when hunting on those clear, calm days:
Create a Plan of Attack – Birds are creatures of habit, which means—no matter what the weather is like—they are likely to be feeding in the same places. So, make sure you are scouting these areas, and don’t go shooting where they are roosting, or you risk scaring them away for good.
Make Them Move –
Having one decoy that you can move with a bit of fishing line is much better
than setting up too many decoys and creating a fiasco. It is essential to try
and mimic the natural conditions as closely as possible to make sure the birds
are buying into your decoy. That means study the area.
Hide in Plain Sight - During bright days with little wind, ducks are
more likely to spot you in the blind. That means it is a better idea to make
sure the sun is at your back as you hunt. Wear your camo and stay still to let
your decoys do the work.
Calm Down on the Call – Call less and call softer. When the wind isn’t blowing, it is much easier for birds to pick up on any mistakes you might be making with your call. If you are vocalizing too much, too loudly, or too often, these ducks and geese are much less likely to believe your spread.
Leave Them Be – If you start hunting from the exact blind location too much, you will quickly find that it won’t be an excellent blind location for very long. If you don’t want to put in the extra work that comes with hunting on a calm, clear day, why not take the day off and wait until the conditions are more advantageous for your hunting style.
