Where Can You Use Airguns in Canada?

Although each province can set restrictions based on the purchaser's age, overarching federal restrictions determine the use of airguns in Canada. It’s important to note that if your airgun’s projectile travels at a muzzle velocity exceeding 500 feet per second or at muzzle energy exceeding 5.7 Joules, it is considered a firearm and must be registered under the Firearm Act.

Knowing and understanding the laws is essential before purchasing an air pistol or rifle. In some cases, violating the law with an airgun goes against the Criminal Code and can have serious consequences.

Competition

There are several types of airgun shooting competitions in Canada. If you’re a competitive target shooter, you will already have a keen understanding of the types of airguns approved for use.

Private Property

Airguns may be used outside city and town limits if you obtain permission from the private landowner. The gun owner must comply with the law and proper handling and safety procedures, regardless of the location.

Hunting

You cannot hunt large game in Canada with air and pellet guns, but you may use them for small game depending on the province. However, never hunt carelessly and always be mindful of safe firearm handling practices.

Remember to always check local, provincial, and federal laws before discharging any firearm.
